Last night we watched the highly anticipated premiere of LOVE MONKEY. Being that I am certainly not the target audience for this mid-thirties, white, single male adventure, many of the references eluded or bored me.
The 2004 Kyle Smith novel on which the characters (more so than the show) are loosely based was hailed as the men's SEX AND THE CITY. If LOVE MONKEY intends to live up to that title it will certainly need to pick up the pace. Our hero, Tom Farrell is a lovable and quirky A&R rep in the music business. His circle of friends (1 black, 1 gay, 1 female, 1 married) provide the backdrop for his wistful narratives. I wanted to assure him somewhere around the second commercial break that I liked him. He didn't need to try so hard.
Tom Cavanaugh is as charming as ever and he holds my attention regardless of the adolescent pop references he sends flying over my head. I'll brush up on my Dylan trivia and hang in for a few more episodes.
