1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1, KJV)
This morning I had the pleasure of hearing Tony Campolo speak. He was phenomenal. Any attempt I make to summerize his thoughts would be lame. I know better than to try. He spoke for over an hour and I took notes like a crazed court reporter, trying to get every point and supporting detail. The detail that has stayed with me today is one of his thoughts on Psychological arguements concerning faith. Psychology tells us our past has the greatest influence on our behavior. We all know our past experiences shape who we are today, but what influence does it have on who we will become tomorrow? We are not Pavlovian dogs. We are not so conditioned by our past that we cannot change. We have the ability to hope. Our hope, our dreams, our goals for the future are what shape our tomorrows. "...faith is the substance of things HOPED for..." We can overcome the experiences of the past. Our hope is our tool for shaping the person we will become tomorrow. Dream big.
