I finished this book Sunday night. It was a quick read. Now here is a quick review.
Henry has a genetic disorder that causes him to travel back and forth in time. Clare is the wife who anchors him to his present. The set up is pure science fiction, but the story is nothing less than a beautiful love story. The writer almost waxes over the sci-fi aspect by first making it a medical condition and secondly making Clare so real.
Henry's future is Clare's past. When Henry first meets Clare in his present, he is unaware that he has (in his future) traveled back to her all through her life. For Henry, these events have yet to occur. This sets up their love story which becomes Clare's reason for being.
The tired old time travel clichés exist, of course. Henry vanishes and reappears somewhere/somewhen else always without clothes. He plays some lottery numbers for a quick fortune and gives his friends glimpses into their future.
The telling of the events of 9/11 was eerie. It makes you wonder how differently you would have felt, had you known in advance. Even with the forewarnings Clare received, her shock and sadness are no different than the rest of the world.
The narrative told alternately in Clare's and Henry's voices flows evenly through the timescape. I was impressed that the writer not only kept the jumping time line well established, she did it without boring or losing me in the process.
There is crude language and some sexual content.
