I'm a music lover. I play the radio, the CD player 24/7. Television I can take or leave. (not counting my addiction to Law & Order.) Certain records have been the sound track of my life. Over the next few days, I'll be talking about a few of them.
The first that comes to mind is U2 Unforgettable Fire. It was Spring 1985. I was on a plane to Europe. I had never flown before and was quite nervous. The guy in the seat next to me was trying to be nice and keep my mind off my irrational fears (or he was flirting...). He offered me a cassette player and a set of headphones. I don't know if I had ever heard U2 before that day.
As it turned out the guy, David, was part of the same tour group. We stayed at the same hotel and took the same tours over the next 12 days. He let me keep the player and the tape the entire visit. I walked thru Paris listening to some of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard, seeing a world I had never before experienced.
I will forever associate the Eiffel Tower and the taste of coffee with the sound of Bono's voice.
Soundtrack for my life mid-April 1985: Unforgettable Fire.
