Yesterday I left work a little early and took in an afternoon movie. There's something wonderfully relaxing about going to the movies in the middle of the day.
I saw HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY. I've loved the book since I was 12. I am so excited that it finally made it to the big screen.
Here is my review:
If you haven't read the book, don't bother. You will spend the entire movie eyebrows knitted together and head tilted slightly to the left. However, if the names Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect and Zaphod Beeblebrox mean anything to you don't miss this movie.
Its almost as if the filmmakers intended it all to be an inside joke. The book is complicated and it would be impossible to bring it all to the screen, but I couldn't help but think, "They should explain the towel." (See? If you didn't read the book, you just knitted your eyebrows together and tilted your head at the towel comment.)
Arhur Dent is perfect! He walked right out of the pages of the book. Mos Def as Ford Prefect is smooth comedy timing at its best. The characters of Trillian and Zaphod didn't play as I thought they did in the book. Trillian comes off more as spacey than dreamy. Zaphod is supposed to be a self-centered egomaniac, not an idiot. The movie plods along at some points, but Vargons are not exactly exciting creatures. When you see a Vargon expect the film pace to slow. My favorite part? Alan Rickman as Marvin, the chronically depressed robot. "Sigh...Why do I bother?" Indeed.
