A common saying around here is something along the lines of, "He doesn't have the sense God gave a goose". I'm afraid that may be true of many of us.
Canadian Geese make their home here in our little corner of Tennessee. They're everywhere. Look up. You're likely to see that trademark "V" formation and hear them honking loudly.
I found some interesting facts about these silly geese.
1) The leader of the flying formation is doing the most work. The other geese benefit by drafting off those in front, making their flight somewhat easier. Those honks you hear as they fly over are shouts of encouragement. "Go! Go, Larry! You the bird!"
2) The bird flying to the leader's right is like his second. He is positioned to take the leader's place should he become tired. The second will not, however, take over without being invited.
3) Canadian Geese mate for life. As a rule, they do not abuse, abandon or neglect their mates.
4) They care for their young as a family. The goslings are watched over and taught for over a year before becoming independent.
Seems to me God gave them a good bit of sense. A sacrificial work ethic, a spirit of encouragement, loyalty, humility, devotion, kindness, family values; all things we humans could improve upon.
